Berkeley, CA (December 4, 2015) – As the Paris climate negotiations slowly and steadily pave the path towards international action in combating climate change, the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and Tsinghua University in Beijing are taking matters into their own hands. On December 1st, the three parties signed their own Memorandum of Understanding to form the Berkeley Tsinghua Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change in an effort to develop clean energy solutions and groom the next generation of sustainable leaders.
BECI Director Paul Wright states, “Now, combined with the power of the Tsinghua scientists, we [BECI] have the ability to address the science, engineering, policy, commerce, and education needed to rapidly move the world to clean energy solutions.” By hosting a scholar exchange program between UC Berkeley and Tsinghua, this Joint Research Center will allow for cross-cultural collaboration in learning best practices in energy and climate from both countries.
The active involvement of LBNL’s established China Energy Group will play a vital role in providing a road map of topics and subjects to pursue in the Joint Research Center. Lynn Price, head of the LBNL China Energy Group, will be collaborating with He Jiankun, former vice president of Tsinghua University, to develop the new Center through BECI’s assets and contributions.
