Data Sciences for the 21st Century: Environment and Society (DS421)”
In Spring 2014, Professor David Ackerly convened a group of nine faculty to write a new proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for an NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) graduate training program entitled: “Data Sciences for the 21st Century: Environment and Society (DS421)”. Three members of this group were from the Philomathia Steering Committee (Ackerly, Hill, Auffhammer) and another was a panel member at the Symposium (Hsiang).
We are very pleased to share the news that this proposal was successful, and we have been awarded $3M over five years to design and run this program. The organization of the Philomathia Symposium played a crucial role to help bring together this disparate group of faculty, and contributed to our success with this novel program. The program is designed to train up to 80 students. We will provide direct financial support (1 year of stipend) for 35 students over the 5 years.
